Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light

Volkswagen of Oak Lawn Oak Lawn IL

If your check engine light won’t turn off even after you’ve determined that nothing is in need of service, you can reset warning lights using these easy service tips from the service pros at Volkswagen Of Oak Lawn.

How to Reset a Check Engine Light

It’s important to note that when your check engine light turns on, it means something is in need of attention. Ignoring this warning can result in expensive repairs down the road, so be sure to schedule service in Oak Lawn as soon as possible to suss out any issues and solve them before they get worse.

If your engine is back to full working order but your check engine light is still on, there are two quick tricks you can try.

Check Your Gas Cap

Your check engine light may illuminate if your gas cap is cracked or loose. Because this can release fumes, your warning light turns on as a result. While parked in Orland Park, remove your gas cap and then screw it back on tightly. This should turn your light off, but if not, you may need to perform a battery reset.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

Manually resetting your check engine light in Chicago is easier than you think. Even if you’re not incredibly familiar with what’s under your hood, you can still perform this quick task. Grab a wrench and use these steps:

  • Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves.
  • Locate the negative terminal. Usually, it has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. For reference, the positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
  • Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, then pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it back up with your wrench.
  • Keep in mind that when you disconnect your battery, it may reset your Volkswagen Digital Cockpit as well.

If this technique doesn’t work, contact our service department for additional assistance on resetting warning lights.
